Gucci Pop-up Apartment at Milan Design Week

One of the most mind-blowing things we saw at this year’s Milan Design Week was the pop-up store from Gucci décor, a stunning two storey boutique showcasing the brand’s homeware collection. Creative director Alessandro Michele managed to ‘Gucci-fie’ an entire apartment and every inch was taken up by the fashion house’s own furniture, porcelain, dinnerware and other home furnishings.

As you would expect from one of the most renowned fashion houses in the world, each piece was immaculately crafted and provided a masterclass in Italian design. With furniture and furnishings from the best native artisans, this apartment was the very definition of Gucci’s opulent style.

Trademark Gucci

The trademark Gucci patterns and prints were shown to stunning effect, with its maximalist aesthetic applied to everything from sofas and chairs to candles, incense trays, wallpaper and plates. Each room had been carefully curated to mirror scenes from real life, with multiple lounge areas, a salon and dining room all decorated and styled by the Gucci design team.

The apartment took on a very grand appearance, with the furnishings and furniture complementing and enhancing the period charm of a marble fireplace, panelled doors and a coffered ceiling. Given the Gucci décor collection was only created in 2017, they have achieved incredible results in such a short space of time.

Among the highlights for us were the high-backed chairs inspired by Medieval porter’s chairs, which would have stood at the gates of noble homes in past centuries. Our eyes were also drawn to the exquisite hand-painted porcelain from renowned Italian artisan Richard Ginori, who has been working with Gucci since 2013. The snake-shaped handles on some of these pieces took more than five hours to craft, a real testament to Ginori’s skill and dedication to his craft. There were also stunning porcelain candlesticks featuring the Gucci signature motifs, including the herbarium flowery print, bold geometric patterns and the Star Eye design.

Overall, the Gucci pop-up boutique has to be the most incredible thing we saw during our time at Salone del Mobile. We’re very much hoping to see more of the same next year.
